Northwood proved far too strong for Twickenham, and the visitors were swamped by a four-gaol flourish which augurs well for Woods’ mammoth Middlesex League task against Harefield this Saturday. However, the home side were unable to convert their mid-field superiority into goals in the first half, and the forwards seemed more concerned with making chances than taking them.
With Harvey and Gould busy in mid-field, only the final touch was needed on several good moves, but still the goals evaded Northwood. In fact, the closest Woods came to scoring was when Chick hit a post, and then Harvey went near with a header.
The second half started with Northwood still in command, but when ten minutes had elapsed without any score, they began to show signs of frustration. It was Taylor who broke the deadlock after Harvey had set up yet another chance, when his powerful ground shot beat the keeper from 20 yards.
The floodgates were now really open, and the Woods finally began to turn it on. A second goal was inevitable, and when Gould’s chip was headed out from under the crossbar, Chick was on hand to smash home a hard drive.
Northwood attacked at will and Pearce, who was brought on for Bailey, went close on two occasions, but it was Horsford who took over the scoring.
His first effort was from far out on the wing, which flew over the keeper and into the net, and the second followed a neat move with Harvey when he rifled home a low shot.
